Tamil Sixty Year Cycle

The Tamil Sixty-Year Cycle Each year in the Tamil calendar has a name. These names follow a 60-year cycle. (The number 60 represents five Jovian periods i.e. it takes Jupiter about 12 years to orbit the sun). After the completion of sixty years, the calendar starts a new with the first year. It is related to the position of the planets in the sky with respect to earth. It means that the two major planets Sani/Saturn (which takes 30 years to complete one cycle around the sun) and the Viyazhan/Jupiter (which takes 12 years to complete one cycle around the Sun) comes to the same position after 60 years. The following list presents the current 60-year cycle of the Tamil calendar: No. Name Name (English) Gregorian Year No. Name Name (English) Gregorian Year 01. பிரபவ Prabhava 1987 - 1988 31. ஹேவிளம்பி Hevilambi 2017 - 2018 02. விபவ Vibhava 1988 - 1989 32. விளம்பி Vilambi 2018 - 2019

Ayanam

Uttarayanam Uttarayanam is basically the period when the Sun travels from Capricorn to Cancer, i.e. from south to north. That’s the reason we call it Uttarayan The Uttarayanam period starts on January 14 on the occasion of Makar Sankranti and ends at Karka Sankranti (July 16). Dakshinayanam Dakshinayanam is the six-month period between Summer solstice and Winter solstice, when the sun travels back from North to South; i.e. from Cancer to Capricorn. We generally see rains, autumn, and winters in this period of year. Dakshinayanam begins on Karka Sankranti or July 16, as it marks the transition of the Sun into Karka rashi (Cancer) and ends at Makar Sankranti. It is believed that Uttarayanam is the day time period for God and Dakshinayanam is the night for them. At the start of Uttarayanam the Gods awake from a long slumber. So, Uttarayanam is considered as an auspicious period Dakshinayanam marks the period when the gods and goddesses are in their celestial sleep. Uttarayanam (
