Mahalaya Paksham

Contents in this Page ● Mahalaya Paksham     ● Dates MAHALAYA PAKSHAM The whole period of a fortnight in the month of Puratassi, starting from Paratipada after the full moon immediately after the Ganapathi Chaturthi and ending with the no moon day is known as Pittu Paksham or Mahalaya Paksham. The last day of the fortnight is Mahalaya Amavasya or Sarvapitri Amavasya. In order to propitiate the departed spirits, it is prescribed to offer gifts and foods to Brahmins on Mahalaya as one of the five daily rituals "Pancha Mahayajna". Tirukurral prescribes in Kural 43, the five duties of a householder are to look after the departed spirits, the Gods, guests, family members and finally look after his own welfare. It is supposed that all the departed spirits get together on Mahalaya Amavasya in the homes of their descendants irrespective of their anniversary day. Ths Saturdays of Purattāsi month is celebrated in the Southern States. People do puja to Venkateshwara and the symbols — Chakra, Nāmam and Shank. Those who cannot do on all the Saturdays try to do on the odd Saturdays — 1st, 3rd and 5th or on any one of the odd Saturdays. This year (2021) there are five Purattāsi Saturdays —18th Sept., 25th Sept., 3rd Oct., 9th October and 16th Oct. 2020. Importance of Purattāsi Sani Purattāsi starts when Sun transit to Kanya Rāsi and Budhan Lord of this Raāsi goes uchcha.
