Tamil Sixty Year Cycle

The Tamil Sixty-Year Cycle

Each year in the Tamil calendar has a name. These names follow a 60-year cycle. (The number 60 represents five Jovian periods i.e. it takes Jupiter about 12 years to orbit the sun).

After the completion of sixty years, the calendar starts a new with the first year.

It is related to the position of the planets in the sky with respect to earth. It means that the two major planets Sani/Saturn (which takes 30 years to complete one cycle around the sun) and the Viyazhan/Jupiter (which takes 12 years to complete one cycle around the Sun) comes to the same position after 60 years.
