Akshaya Tritiya

This year Akshaya Tritiya falls on 14 th May 2021.  It is celebrated on the sukhla tritiya of Chittirai month of Tamil Panchangam. It coincides with the nakshatram 'Rohini' (upto 5:45am)the star of Lord Krishna. ‘Akshaya’ means in Sanskrit means never diminishing. Hence the day of Akshaya Tritiya is believed to bring success and good luck which never diminishes. So people try to do all the good things which they want never to be diminished in their life. Tamil New Year (Puthandu and Vishu)

This year Tamil New Year Falls on 14th April 2022 and the year "Subhakrithu" starts.  The year starts at 8:46am on 14th April 2022. We as Palakkadu Tamil Brahmins celebrate both Tamil Puthandu and Vishu Punya Kaalam.   TAMIL PUTHANDU We cook lavish meals Payasam, Kichadi, Pachchadi, Aviyal, Kari, Kootu Sambhar, More Kulambu, Rasam, Vadai, Boli and Mango Pickle.We serve on banana leaf. These are usual dishes on any festive days.  Main unique dish is Veppam Poo Pachchadi  which has all the six tastes - sweet, salty, bitter, sour, pungent and astringent. Since this year it falls on Sunday we can relish the food with utmost satisfaction. We buy new dresses for this occasion.  In Kolkata there is clearance sale from 1st April to 13th April. Thai Pūsam

The ascendancy (highest position of dominance) of a certain stars in some months is celebrated as an important festival of that month. In the month of Thai (Mid January to Mid February) the star Pūsam (Pushya in Sanskrit) has such importance and celebrated as Thai Pūsam. Thai Pūsam falls on the Pournima (or comes as close to it as possible) in the month of Thai/ makara coinciding with the star Pushya. ARUDRA DARISANAM

ARUDRA DARISANAM Mārgaḷi Thiruvāthirai occurs in conjunction with the full moon and the star Ardrā. This festival of Nataraja Chidambaram is a ten-day festival. Ten days earlier, on the first day, there is a flag hoisting in the temple. Every day there is a festival culminating on the 9th when Nataraja the presiding deity in the temple is taken out in procession along the four main streets of the city in a gaily and artistically but traditionally decorated chariot. Usually, five chariots are drawn around - those of Lord Nataraja, of his concert Shakti Sivagamasundari, of Ganesha, of Subramanya and of Chandesha. The chariot of Nataraja is the biggest and the others are much smaller. These five are Pancha Murthy in Saiva worship. Abhishekam and alankarams take place. Sukhla Sasht after Diwali is very important as on this Sashti Soorasamharam took place. Skanda Sashti Kavacham is read on the six days and on the last day i.e. Sashti, Archchanai is done using Ashtothra namavali . On Sukhla Sashti of every month Skanda Sashti Vratham is observed. Some obstain salt on this day and read the Kavacham 36 times. I read 36 times and I read it fast. Preparation for puja

Preparation for Daily Puja Removing the flowers of yesterday's puja. Weekly once clean the idols with water and put chandan and kumkum.  If you have picture frame clean  with damp cloth and then with dry cloth and put chandan and kumkum.  Put chandan and kumkum on the lamp also.Usually people lamp clean idols/photo frame and brass, copper utensils or steel and plastic plates on Thursday night.  But can be done on any convenient day. Clean the plates and panchapatra udhrini daily Try to buy flowers in the morning if possible.  Flowers need not be washed.   This year VAIKASI VISAKAM falls on the Saturday, 18 th May 2019. Vaikasi Visakam is the day of incarnation of Lord Murugan. Vaikasi Visakam is celebrated on the day when the Nakshatram Visakam coincides with the full moon or Pournami in the month of Vaikasi or Rishabham month.Vishakam is the name of the 16th of the 27 nakshatrams or constellations consisting of six stars. Lord Murugan is said to be six faced, riding a peacock, dressed in red.
